Yay! Push ups! I love them like a love Burpees....NOT AT ALL!

This weight-bearing exercise is fantastic at sculpting your shoulders and arms, building up your pecs (and for us ladies, giving us a little 'lift'!), and making your back look just incredible.

But, they’re not easy! So, I understand why when Tony Horton or Shaun T tells you to knock out a set of push-ups in P90X orINSANITY, you groan. And, after a few sets of these grueling exercises, perhaps you’ve started to wonder: How much weight am I really pushing here? What percent of my body weight am I lifting? Can I do push-ups on my knees instead? And, if I need to do them on my knees, should I bother doing them at all?

Articles published within the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research revealed that men lifted about 66.4% of their body weight with each rep when they did a push-up on their toes. On their knees, they lifted about 52.9% of their body weight. In other words, a 180-pound man will lift 119.5 pounds per rep doing a regular push-up and 95.2 pounds doing a push-up on their knees. Women lift slightly less of their body weight per rep, but the difference is negligible.

Want to determine approximately how much you’re lifting? Put your scale on level ground and place your hands on it and do a push-up on your toes. Have a friend read the number on the scale if you cannot. Then, repeat the exercise, but this time, do the push-up on your knees. The number you see is approximately how much body weight you’re lifting though the number will vary depending on your arm position (i.e. military, diamond, wide, etc.)

How to do the perfect push up:
Whether you’re on your toes or on your knees, it’s important to have the proper form. To do a perfect pushup:
1. Get into plank position and make sure your hands are aligned with your shoulders but just wider than them. Tighten your core.
2. Lower your body until your chest almost touches the floor, tucking your elbows in as you do. When you’re at the bottom, your arms should be at 45-degree angle. Keep your back flat and do not let your back or hips sag.

If you can’t do a push-up on your toes yet, don’t give up! You’re still getting a great workout.

For the few of you who want to make your push-up harder and lift more of your body weight, here are some tips from easiest to hardest:
1. Slow it down. By taking more time to do each repetition, you increase the time that each muscle must stay contracted.
2. Bring your hands and feet closer together to move your center of gravity forward and make your shoulders, pecs, back, and triceps do more work. Tighten your core to protect your lower back.
3. Change the angle. Place your feet on a stable surface – such as a plyo box or weight bench – and keep your hands on the ground. This puts more of your weight onto your shoulders.
4. Move away from a stable surface and do your push-ups on a medicine ball or balance ball as demonstrated in P90X2. These exercises will not only challenge those muscles groups but also force you to tighten your core to stay balanced.
5. Forget push-ups. Do handstands instead.

Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body? 
I was miserable. I had no energy, and just wanted to sit around and watch tv. I was cheating myself and my family. I felt embarrassed and ashamed how I let myself go over the last 4 years. I went from being a fit individual to being obese over a 4 year span. I truly fell into the everyday work schedule and eating fast food 5-10 times a week. What I hated most of all was that I couldn't hold my end of the bargain to keeping up with my daughter. She wanted me to do something and i would tell her no because I was lazy. To me that was not being a dad that I truly should be.

What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey? 
My wife became pregnant and are son was going to be born in June 2011. I told myself there is no way I can contribute to my family living the same life style. I was upset what I had become and not being the dad I think I physically could be. I started my journey on January 30, 2011 devoted to change my life. I was not going to have a wife, 2 kids, and be obese. I felt like I was on the road of destruction until I found out my wife was pregnant. My son was born on June 15, 2011 and i had lost 80 pounds! As of May 21st, 2012 I have continued the journey using P90X and I have lost a total of 125 pounds! I also have became a firefighter in August 2011 in my town, and physically have no problems because of P90X! I can't imagine being a firefighter without the program! My wife started P90X in January 2012 and she has lost 30 pounds year to date! The whole family is bringing it!

What is the greatest challenge you faced before beginning the program? How did the program and Beachbody® help you overcome that challenge? 
My biggest challenged I faced was everyday life. I got tired anytime I walked or had to do any physcial activity. I would get tired so much going up a flight of stairs and thats no joke! I hated it! I couldn't even play with my daughter most of the time because I got winded! I truly was cheating myself and her. I could play for a few minutes but I would be tired right away. Doing P90X has completely changed this. I have down a complete overhaul in my health care! I never get tired doing anything! It is like I am the energizer bunny! It feels good that I can go as long as I want and have more in the tank if I need it. I am done cheating my family! I started doing P90X at a very heavy weight but Tony had alternate moves during the process and I did those. I continued and pushed through it until one day I could do all the moves! Over time you get stronger and as long as you stick with it, you will get there!

Why did you choose this particular program? 
I saw P90X on tv a billion times and it looked hard! I wanted to take the challenge because I could do it in my own home. I also felt that the system worked because I had visited the website and seen results on tv. I said, why not me? The challenge was on! I am so proud that I have completed this program! I feel like I am in a select group of people that have completed something that not a lot can say they have. I live everyday to inspire people and pass the knowledge that I gained out of this and promote P90X much as I can. Thank you for helping me change my life!

What in particular did you like about the program you chose? 
P90X change it up everyday. Then when you got comfortable, it was time to change up the order of the workouts in the phases. The program keeps your body guessing and muscle confusion is the real deal!

Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody program. Which achievements are you proud of? 
I started at 300 pounds and I am down to 175 pounds now. I started with 3 regular push ups in 1 minute and now I can do 60 push ups in the same time. I took my muscle building to another level. I wasn't sure what my body fat % was but I know it was high! Today I am at 10% and continuing to lower that number. Tony Horton is motivating and funny at the same time! I am proud to say I have completed P90X and continue with the program! People ask me what I did to loose weight and I say P90X. It turns into a 10 minute conversation and I find out weeks later they ordered it and they start it! Awesome feeling!

How has your life changed since completing your Beachbody program? 
Not sure where to begin! I am so crazy about my health and others now! I want to help others achieve their goals and motivate! I have so many people I know seek my advice on what they can do to change what their doing. The biggest thing for me is that my family is active and we don't sit around on the couch anymore. We are always outside doing something and enjoying life more then ever! Thank you!

Conscious eating is the cornerstone of the Ultimate Reset. Following the advice within the program, I implemented a daily reflection on how proper nutrition can serve my body, mind, and spirit. Eating should be a pleasant experience! 

Doing so helped me become conscious of an emotional eating pattern, typically involving Marmite on toast! Darn! The Reset has help me reach an awareness of how and when I'm consuming food and converting it into the energy my body needs. Sure I'd love a piece of dark chocolate right night but I'm finding it easier to be grateful for the bounty of goodness that comes from real, fresh, nutrient dense foods. And hey, a huge bowl of fruit with some nuts AND a little shaved dark chocolate will be in my future!.

TIPS!

 ~ USE THE PORTAL! It is there to help and I admit I didn't use it like I should have Oh, my life would have been SO much easier! I created my own shopping lists and found myself darting back and forth to the store for items I had missed. Meanwhile, those clever chaps at Beachbody had a perfect list waiting for me to print...I should have remembered that they think of everything!

~ Create the right enviroment. Keeping all manner of processed snacks in the house is a sure way to sabotage your healthy eating plan! Clear the cupboards of junk food well in advance! Learn how to make quick and healthy snacks then keep them within reach.

~ Eat before everyone else. If you are concerned about craving your kids Mac and Cheese....eat before the family. I found this a little tough at first due to the fact that I am prone to do the typical 'Mom thing' and put my own needs last. Ha! However, eating early really helped me stay on track. Plus, my family have been incredibly supportive and that alone is a HUGE help in getting through the Reset without cheating. 

~ Use your Coach! If your friends and family are less than happy about your decision to forego happy hour and Sunday wings, then you need to get support! You have options, the Ultimate Reset has it's own support portal for all Reseters as well as buddies through Beachbody.com and your Coach. Don't have a Coach? Get one!

I'm in the home stretch! WHOOP! Only 3 more days of the detox and I as yet, I haven't chewed anybody's arm off!

Eating right should not be a chore, or a stressful experience for you and your family. When you all making healthy choices, your will reap huge benefits in your overall physical and mental condition. Check out these tips below to help you create the right environment for health. It's easier to make change when options around you are those that are better for you! 



Try the following tips to help you and your family make healthy eating a daily habit.

  • Organize this crucial part of your home so you actually want to prepare your food! Keep it neat and clean, put your garbage out and keep your junk mail off the counters
  • Throw out the processed snacks - Chips, cookies, candy and process, prepared foods can be tempting, even more so when they are lying in wait on your kitchen table or countertop. Learn how to make quick and healthy snacks or choose fruits, vegetables, nuts. I happen to love blueberries and walnuts together. 
  • Fridge overhaul - stock the shelves with fruits and vegetables, organic dairy or even better, dairy alternatives like almond and rice milks. 
  • Chop! - Pre-chopped veggies can be the difference between falling off the wagon and staying well put. Prepare vegetables at the start of the week, or when you grocery shop. Storing them in airtight containers in the fridge will help you create healthy food when you are short on time or craving delivery. 
  • Cook big batches of healthy food and keep it in the fridge. Save time in the week as well as keep you from reaching for the take out menu. Not sure what you make? Use an online meal planner with shopping lists and recipes. 
  • Recognize emotional eating - reaching for the chips when you are down could be sabotaging your healthy eating plan. It happens to many of us :)
  • Parents set powerful examples for their children. Teaching your kids to make healthy choices is one of the best gifts you can give them. Famlies can take small steps together to encourage healthy eating and an active family lifestyle, setting your children up for a flourishing future.
  • Have an accountability partner. This could be a friend, family member, co-worker or even a Coach
Setting up a healthy environment doesn't have to happen overnight. 
Make small steps, become accustomed to the change and start reaping amazing results 
and getting that much closer to your goals!

Most of us have heard the term "emotional eater." This is something very real and just one aspect of the body/emotion equation that may affect you or someone you know ..........This girl!

I was recently given an opportunity to recognize that I have my own emotional eating patters. During a 21 Day Cleansing program, it shocked me to discover that, though I always felt like I had my eating under control, I too reached for food for comfort on more occasions that I could even consciously admit to. 

Since the cleanse, i've realised that most of us are surprised when we discover that our eating is often based more on our feelings than on our actual appetites. Instead of the physical symptom of hunger initiating the eating, an emotion triggers the eating. It could be sadness, happiness, stress... what we reach for when eating to satisfy an emotion largely depends on the emotion. Granted, we may be experiencing some genuine hunger. But when you feel those pangs, take a moment to ask yourself if we really craving food, or perhaps something else—such as comfort, approval, or fulfillment. 

How to distinguish 'emotional eating' from hunger

  • When emotional hunger rumbles, one of its distinguishing characteristics is that you're focused on a particular food, which is likely a 'comfort food'. This can range from Pizza to Ice Cream and only THAT food can fill the void. The choice is usually an unhealthy option and more often associated with a negative emotion though some people are 'happy' eaters too! 
  • When you eat because you are actually hungry, you're open to options as opposed to craving one food.
  • Emotional hunger feels like it needs to be satisfied instantly with the food you crave and the craving intensifies; physical hunger can wait.
  • Emotional hunger comes on suddenly; physical hunger occurs gradually.
  • Eating to satisfy an emotional need, you're more likely to keep eating even when you are full. When you're eating because you're hungry, you're more likely to stop when you're full.
  • Emotional eating can leave behind feelings of guilt; eating when you are physically hungry does not.

Do you recognize any of those tell tale signs within yourself?

If so, perhaps you should start paying more attention to the cues that trigger your own emotional eating patterns. Let yourself acknowledge this realization, knowing you can do so without having to give in. And then commend yourself for your growing awareness.

As my cleanse reached it end, I was able to identify what triggers those patterns, and begin to release the cycle. It's incredibly empowering!

Taking a job with all it's hassles, hours, commutes, insecurity, bosses....blah blah, is just that much easier...is it?. You want to get fit, be healthy, run half marathons, get your 6 pack back, lose the baby weight, get out of your 9-5, spend more time with the family, travel, stay home with your kids, do something you enjoy, get out of living pay cheque to pay cheque, the current economy is terrible and job security is practically non-existent...whatever the reason, I believe everyone should and can have their own business. Whether part-time or full time, taking control of your own income and schedule is your right! 

"I am not in shape" or "I am to heavy". - Even better! As you go through your transformation, people will begin to take notice and ask you about what you are doing to lose weight and get in shape. "I am not a fitness or nutritional expert". - The trainers who developed the DVDs or Beachbody’s staff of fitness and nutritional advisors are so you don't have to be. If someone has a question you have an entire panel of experts to turn to.  Most of our top Coaches are not fitness qualified. As Coaches, we help our clients by making sure they follow the program and meet their nutritional needs, leave the development of workout programs and nutritional supplements the experts!

"I don’t like to sell." -Me neither! Which is why I don't sell and neither will you. Snapping back from what was beginning to feel like the 'Zombie Apocalypse', I'm thrilled to be rounding the bend into the home stretch of the Reset! It's doing wonders for me, I know this, yet I can't deny this has been a challenge. Today I am feeling lively and considerably more focused. The Detox week wiped me out, this week I'm already up early, awake and refreshed and I'm feeling good about preparing great food again. 

It makes total sense that what we crave when we are low, down, tired, stressed..those are the things we crave with even more intensity when we detox. At the end of the last phase, i'e last night and this am..I've been hard pressed not to 'chew someone's arm off' for a piece of toast. Why toast? Because my Mom always made me toast when I was sick and I felt pretty awful for the last few days. 

Saving Money

Mint.com loves to tell when I'm over budget but rarely gives me any kudos for coming in under budget. So I was surprised to see that I've actually SAVED money by doing the Reset. Aside from the cost of the kit itself, my grocery bill has been about $50 over but I have not spent a dime on eating out, coffee, lunch, snacks and those little expenditures typically add up to a $100+ over the course of a month. 

Plus I've frozen 2-3 extra servings of every soup, blanched and frozen extra veggies and stocked my condiments shelves with the makings for months of homemade salad dressings and marinades.

Another way i've saved is with the kids meals. Not having typical kids foods as options has resulted in spending less on convenience foods, cooking 1 meal with perhaps the addition of a protein like salmon AND encouraging the kids to eat healthier - all good things.

The results so far

To date I've lost 6lbs, gained some hours of sleep, saved money AND...and this part I love, people have been telling me I look alive and vibrant. My skin is definitely clearing up and I have to admit, I do FEEL more energized and luminous, if you will. Though calling oneself 'luminous' just makes me giggle.

Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body? 
Before I started Shakeology: The Workouts, I was a very immobile and lazy person. My hobbies included eating unhealthy, watching tv, playing video games, and sleeping in late. I was completely embarrassed by my body and wore the largest and baggiest clothes I could find because I thought they would make me appear to be skinnier. I was wearing 4XL shirts and 42 waist pants at my worst. I felt like everywhere I went, especially restaurants, people were watching me and secretly making fun of me for how I looked. I had no confidence in myself whatsoever and was usually withdrawn from my peers. I hated even getting my picture taken - I mean come on, who wants to have a picture of themselves in which they are very out of shape? Not me. I knew I needed to get in shape, but I always found excuses to not work out or to not eat healthy... It wasn't until I had a very scary wake-up call that I decided I had no more room for excuses.

What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey? 
While on a vacation with my family last summer, we had decided to go to a pizza and fried chicken buffet - my favorite! After sitting down with my third plate, I had sudden chest pains, trouble breathing, and could barely move. I was taken to the emergency room to get looked at. The doctor told me that I needed to start treating my body right, or I'd be lucky to reach my mid-30's. No twenty year old should ever have to go to the emergency room for health problems due to obesity. Not only was I scared, but I could tell my family was scared for me. I had done a lot of research on what I should choose to get in shape, and I came across Shakeology and read through pages upon pages of transformation stories.

What is the greatest challenge you faced before beginning the program? How did the program and Beachbody® help you overcome that challenge? 
The biggest challenge that I faced before doing this program was that I didn't have the motivation to make it to the gym every day and would come up with an excuse to not go. The Shakeology DVD's helped me overcome this challenge because I would set them right in front of my TV every day and forced myself to put the DVD in and press play. When you're working out with a trainer through the DVD, you have an almost automatic reaction in that you want to push harder and try to keep up with them. It's like working out with a friend, the trainers provided a great sense of support and motivation, even though I was alone in my living room.

Why did you choose this particular program? 
Being obese, I didn't want anybody to see me working out, so public gyms were out of the question. I didn't want to be breaking a sweat after walking on the treadmill for five minutes while the fit people next to me were running as if they didn't have a care in the world. I needed a program that I could do within the privacy of my home, and I needed one that wasn't going to be a waste of time, which is why I decided to give Shakeology: The Workouts a try. The transformation stories were too good to pass up, not to mention the DVD's were free with my order of Shakeology. I actually looked forward to popping in the Shakeology DVD every day!

What in particular did you like about the program you chose? 
I was hesitant to try this program at first because I figured that if they were free with my Shakeology order, they weren't going to be very effective - how wrong I was. This program was effective because they provided a lower impact workout that I needed for my joints and were actually really fun. The trainers and participants in the video were awesome and made me want to push even harder. This program is great for people who want to take a break from their other programs.

My results were more than just physical. I lost over 70 lbs., and am now wearing Large and XL shirts - down from a 4XL! I have confidence that I never had before. I walk around with my chest out and my chin up high because I'm proud of what I not only accomplished, but also in the way I look. I think the achievement that I'm most proud of though, is that I inspired family and friends to start changing their lives. I have family members that have dropped tremendous amounts of weight. Friends would come to me and ask me all the time what they can do to start getting in shape, and some have even bought a Beachbody program! When I first started Shakeology: The Workouts, I didn't think it would have an awesome effect on more than just me. I'm now a Beachbody Coach, and I'm helping others change their lives as well! The experience is incredibly rewarding.

How has your life changed since completing your Beachbody program? 
My life has definitely changed since completing my Beachbody program. I have confidence that I have never had before and am even active than I was when I first completed my two rounds of P90X. Shakeology: The Workouts were a great way to get back in shape after a bad couple months filled with different injuries that prevented me from working out and I had to ease back into working out. I'm a huge advocate of the Shakeology workouts now and recommend them to people who want to change it up a little bit with their workout routine. It's nice being able to run places and jump even higher! I feel incredible and it's all thanks to Shakeology and the Shakeology 
DVD's.

How did Shakeology® support your transformation? What are the greatest benefits?
Shakeology is incredibly delicious; something that's hard to come by in meal replacement shakes these days. I can say with 100% honesty, that after drinking Shakeology, you just feel healthier, even if you are sitting there on the couch, relaxing. After starting on Shakeology, I noticed that my overall health was much better. I haven't had a cold since... I don't even know when! I love that Shakeology fills you up as well, another flaw that most replacement shakes have.
